Carnoustie Group plant a centenary celebration

10/03/2009

The 1st Carnoustie Scout Group recently celebrated 100 years of Scouting in the town with a special tree planting ceremony.

Over 50 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Leaders, Executive Committee members and Parents planted 100 Scots Pine Trees off Barry Road in Carnoustie to commemorate the founding of Carnoustie Scout Group in February 1909.

In Carnoustie today there are over 100 young people involved in Scouting every week. The current Scout Hall in Links Avenue has a group meeting every night of the week being home to the Beaver Colony, the two Cub Packs, Scout Troop and the Explorer Unit. Although a lot has changed over the last 100 years, the enthusiasm of young people to participate in the exciting activities of Scouting, the support of men and women of goodwill around the world to enable the Scouting programme to happen, and the continuing vision of Scouting’s leaders have been constant.

The centenary tree planting event could not have taken place without the assistance of Fred Conacher who is the Angus Council Parks Services Tree Officer and with an Environment Improvement grant from Angus Council. Carnoustie Scout Group will continue to look after the area and plan to install bird boxes and bat boxes over the next few months. The Scots pines were chosen for the ceremony in order to encourage red squirrels to inhabit the area.
