Explorer Introduction to Navigation & Hill Skills

Meggernie (See Venue Details)

Explorers and Explorer Leaders

Event Description

Glasgow Scouts Hills Forum are running an Explorer training weekend at Meggernie over the weekend of 11-13 April. This will be run on a “first come - first served” basis.

Participants will be meeting at Meggernie by 10pm (at the latest) on Friday night and will then go over the plan for the weekend.

Please note that as training is only provided during the day, Explorer Leaders must arrange adult supervision of their own Explorers for both evenings (this doesn’t have to be the leader but must be someone with an appropriate Scout Disclosure check, and the person supervising does not need to come on the hills during the day, although they’re very welcome, subject to numbers).

The weekend is self-catering; Leaders / supervisors and Explorers should make arrangements regarding all meals for the weekend ensuring appropriate nutrition for a weekend outdoors, including packed lunches for Saturday and Sunday. (If the course is fully booked we will try to arrange a service team to provide the catering).

Saturday will be based around the centre but we will be out at night with a small night navigation session, and on Sunday we will be on the hills all day, so please ensure that you have sufficient clothing to be warm and comfortable outdoors for 2 days.

All maps, map cases, head torches and compasses will be supplied. You will need to provide all other items of kit yourself. In particular please ensure that you have hiking boots and that these are broken in before wearing them on the weekend, along with a rucsac with sufficient space to carry group equipment. We have a limited supply of water proof jackets and trousers if you need to borrow them. If you have any queries regarding equipment or wish to borrow anything then please contact us as soon as possible i.e. not the week before! (Kit is loaned on a first-come, first served basis).

Contact Jim Elliott at [email protected] or call 07814 137046 for more information and to book your place today!

Once you have registered your interest with Jim, we would ask you to send a cheque for £10.00 to Gary Bainbridge, c/o The Scout Shop, Elmbank Street, Glasgow G2 4PB. Please make your cheque payable to Greater Glasgow Scouts.
