Scouts play part in Scottish rugby win
31/03/2008
100 Scouts and Beavers played their own part in Scotland’s RBS 6 Nations victory over England at Murrayfield at the beginning of March.
John Beaton, who is an Explorer Scout with the 21st South Queensferry Scout troop and also a young leader at Kirkliston Cubs, originally wrote to the Scottish Rugby Union last year to ask if he could carry a flag at any of the upcoming rugby matches.
To John’s delight, the SRU replied asking if he could organise 42 flag bearers for Scotland’s game against England. John and his mum Hannah, who is an ASL at Queensferry, organised volunteers from both troops.
After a further request from the SRU, and with help from Blackford, Cramond, South Morningside and 150th Haymarket Scout Groups, an extra 50 volunteers were also provided for the opening ceremony.
On the 8th March the big moment arrived as the Scout participants carried 42 flags around the pitch and 2 giant flags onto the pitch for the entire opening ceremony. Everyone commented on the professional way that the Scouts conducted themselves in front of the 67,000 spectators in the stadium and the greater numbers who watched it on live on TV. It was a great ambassadorial event for the Scout Movement and a thrilling day for all who took part.
