Aberdeen Scouts up for People's Millions funding
08/11/2010
Aberdeen Scouts are thrilled to have beaten off stiff competition and reached the final of the People's Millions on STV.
As part of the Step Forward Project - the development and upgrade of the facilities of Aberdeen’s Templars' Scout Campsite - they submitted an application to the People's Millions for funding for restoration and improvement of the campfire circle.
If successful in achieving enough votes to secure the £49,000 funding, the Scouts will be able to improve the seating, accessibility and secure the banks of the natural amphitheatre, providing a safe, accessible space for more young people and adult volunteers to learn new skills, share experiences and enjoy the outdoors.
Commenting on the good news, Explorer Scout Ceara Barnes said: "Supporting our project would mean that we are able to restore a well loved area at our campsite. We don't just have campfires there, we used it one weekend to test our survival skills. We learnt how to build a shelter and cook fish in newspaper on an open fire."
Templars’ Scout Campsite is also used by Guides, schools and other youth organisations. It has also hosted many a national camp and competition and holds a lot of good memories for a lot of people.
The Scouts’ project appeal will be featured on STV North on Tuesday 23 November 2010 at 6pm. However, any supporters in the STV Central region can still vote for the project. Visit www.peoplesmillions.org.uk for more information.
This is a fantastic opportunity for Scouting not just to potentially secure funding but also highlight the amazing work our adult volunteers do to promote the development of young people.
The People’s Millions is a partnership between Big Lottery Fund and ITV, where the public decides which local community projects get up to £50,000 of Lottery Funding.
