Update on Cub Scout and Scout Activity Badges

Cub Scout Activity Badges

Gilwell have issued a short update on changes to the requirements for the Cub Scout and Scout Athlete activity badges, including Athlete Plus.

They are now seeking member’s comments and feedback.

Please can all Cub Scout Leaders read this article and co-ordinate feedback to the email address listed so that we can participate fully in the consultation.

Secret Codes

On 24th May 1844, Samuel Morse sent his first telegraphic message from the basement of the Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C. to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s Mount Clare Station.

Communication is now a major part of everyday life but why not get your Cubs to try some of the more traditional methods?

The Communicator Activity Badge requires you to find out how people with a visual or hearing impairment communicate and to write & decipher three simple messages using codes, ciphers, semaphore etc.

SignalPoster.jpgYou could use some of the activities found on Programmes Online:

  1. Secret Codes – You’ll need a copy of the Secret Code activity sheet per Cub Scout (available to download), pens, some lemons cut in half, a container to put the lemon juice into, something thin enough to dip into the lemon juice to write with e.g. matchsticks or cotton buds and matches or candles to reveal the invisible code.
  2. Makaton Activity - Download the Makaton activity sheet to learn the Cub Scout Promise using Makaton; a form of sign language used by people with hearing impairments.

Join-in-Jamboree

A reminder that a fabulous Join-in-Jamboree resource has been produced for Cubs to help them celebrate the forthcoming World Scout Jamboree in Sweden.

If you haven’t received a hard copy, you can downloaded it from the link in the right-hand column of this page.

Many of these activities can help Cubs to complete the Global Challenge Badge, particularly part 1 and part 3.

5-Stars Weekend (Sixers & Leader's Training Weekend)

The 5-Stars (Sixers Training and Adult Refreshing of Skills) Weekend is happening between Friday 2nd and Sunday 4th September 2011.

5 Stars Weekend Badge.jpgPlease remember that you only have until 31st May 2011 to make your initial booking for Sixers and Leaders who want to camp at Auchengillan near Glasgow.

We apologise for the technical glitches that caused the booking form to not be displayed properly. We have now updated this.

An exciting programme for both Sixers and Leaders will include water walkers, rifle shooting, camp games & activities, creative activities plus lots more.

We are only looking for numbers (not names) attending at this stage – and remember that there is no cooking or washing up to be done which gives more time for play or coffee and chat!

You can download more the booking form from the right-hand menu, or see the Event page for more information.
