Congratulations to two Scottish Scouts who have been selected as Young Sports Ambassadors by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG).
Sean McPhee and Lyndsey Cackette, both of South Morningside Explorer Scout Unit (SMESU) were chosen from amongst many hopefuls after an intensive application and interview process to help promote participation and engagement with the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games and values.
They will also both attend as assistants at the Sitting Down Volleyball fixtures during the London 2012 Paralympics.
Inspire Mark presentation
The pair, both aged 16, were on hand with other members from thier Unit to accept a certificate on behalf of The Scout Association from former Olympic, Commonwealth, European and World champion triple jumper Jonathan Edwards at a Scotland Inspire Project Showcase event at Spartan Football Club in Edinburgh yesterday.
The event was also attended by Commonwealth Games and Sport Minister Shona Robison.
Sean, 16, who will be helping at the Paralympics’ Sitting Volleyball event as part of his YSA role said, “Scouting has affected my role as a Young Sport Ambassador as it has allowed me to get to know things about myself I didn't know before I started scouting. As a Young Ambassador I have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity where I will be helping to promote the Olympic and Paralympic Values of equality, courage, determination, friendship, inspiration, excellence and respect. These values are similar to the scouting values and I am proud that we (the Scouts) have received the Inspire mark as well.”
Lyndsey, also 16, said, “I’m so honoured and excited to have been selected as a Young Sports Ambassador, which I believe my background in scouting helped me achieve through giving me confidence and leadership skills. It is also great to know that our whole organisation (the Scouts) is involved through Our Sporting Adventure, because so many of the values and goals of the Olympics are the same as ours.”
You can read more about Our Sporting Adventure on The Scout Association website. Also look out for a special feature on it in the March edition of Pathfinder.
