International Horizons                                                         September 2009

There have been a number of activities going on the International front since the last issue of the Scottish Programme eNews. There has been the trip by over 400 Scouts and Explorers to Bla Sommer in Denmark, a very successful Explorer Belt to Poland with Explorers and Networkers from all over Scotland, and numerous Group, Unit, and District camps, trips, and adventures abroad, as well as HoHo here in Scotland.

A new Scottish Advisor for International has been appointed to follow on from all the hard work put in by Hamish Leal. We welcome to the team Leonard Jamieson (ex-Forth Region International Advisor). Leonard comes with great experience of arranging and participating in trips abroad, and is looking forward to helping anyone with any queries.

The 2011 Jamboree in Sweden is now progressing with the appointment of the Unit Leaders. The Units and their Leaders are:

Unit Name Unit Leader
North Fiona Smart
East George Walker
Central Dougie Woodrow
SE Gary Bainbridge
Clyde Kenneth Robertson
South David McCallum

Their assistants are in the process of being appointed following applications for the role from a very high standard of candidates. For those of you who missed out and are considering applying for the role of IST, please note that applications will able to be made online through the UKHQ website – www.scouts.org.uk/ist2011. The application form will be available from 10am on Monday 19th October 2009, and candidates will be taken on a first come basis.

Please note they are only looking for 500 people for the whole of the UK, and it is expected that all places could be filled by the end of that week. A selection event is planned for the 30th January 2010, organised by the International Office at Gilwell but to be held in Fife.

The Malawi project is gaining momentum; badges are still available from SHQ for £1 each. Any monies raised by Colonies, Packs, Troops, Units, Groups or Districts should be sent in to SHQ clearly marked for the Appeal, cheques made payable to “The Scout Association”.  Congratulations to Kelvin Valley District Scout Council, 10th Glasgow (Germiston) Group and 10th Perthshire Cub Pack who are the first three to receive a Gold Certificate. Programmes to help with Global Challenges and International Friendship Partnership Awards using Malawi as a theme will hopefully follow in October.  In the meantime ‘Happy Fundraising’, and remember every penny will make a difference!
