Training – help required!
The UK Special Needs Team is undertaking a review of Special Needs issues in the Training modules. Special Needs is covered in Module 7 (Diversity) and Module 36 (Specialist Special needs support). However many Leaders have expressed their concern that when dealing with many Programme issues (indoor and outdoor), there can be matters relevant to including a member with additional support needs and this is not normally covered in the relevant modules.
I would be very interested to hear from any Leaders, and indeed trainers, who might like to give us your thoughts or concerns so that we can have a more informed debate to consider if and how this issue should be covered.
Equipment
At the start of our new season, I am aware that many young people with additional support needs will be joining Sections, moving up to the next Section or indeed just starting another year. There is a wide range of equipment that can be obtained to help those for whom the usual equipment is not suitable or provides too difficult a challenge. The Special Needs Team will be happy to discuss any situation and help find suitable equipment. The Scottish Special Needs Fund is available to help defray the cost of any specialist equipment that might be required. Examples of specialist equipment are Braille compasses, balls with bells inside or even just extra equipment that may be required for an activity or outing.
The Special Needs Team is there to help however trivial you may consider the issue. Please do not hesitate to contact us to ensure you feel fully supported in helping members with Special Needs.
